Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Chatra came under existence in 2005 under the administrative control of Birsa Agricultural University, Ranchi with the following mandates and activities
- Conducting on farm trial (OFT) for technology assessment and refinement
- Organizing frontline demonstratios to establish production potential of various crops and enterprises on the farmers fields
- Organizing need-based training for farmers in modern agricultural technologies and extension personnel to orient them in the frontier areas of technology development
- Creating awareness of improved technologies to larger masses through appropriate extension activities
- Production and supply of quality seed, planting material, livestock and poultry breed and products to the farming community
- Work as a resource and knowledge centre of agricultural technologies for supporting initiatives of public, private and volunTanry sectors for improving the agricultural economy of the district.
District at a Glance
- Chatra is situated in the north-west of Jharkhand State at a latitude of 23º44º N-24º3143” N and longitude of 84º27º00”E - 8521’ 03E.
- It comprises of one sub-division with 12 community development blocks viz., Itkhori, Mahuatand, Chatra, Kanhachhati Hunteganj, Pratappur, Simariya, Tandwa, Kunda, Lawalong, Gidhour and Pathalgadda. There are altogether 159 pancyats and 1479 villages in the district.
- Chatra is an agricultural district due to lack of any major industry.
Majority of the population depends on agriculture for its livelihood.
Thrust area
- Provide appropriate technologies according to micro farming situations.
- Increasing cropping intensity through intensification and diversification.
- Introduction of cash crops like, marigold, capsicum, off season vegetables, etc.
- Self employment of rural youth in the vocations of their choice.
- Income generatio of landless farmers through goatry, piggery, and poultry.
- Introduction of climate resilient technologies for cereals, oilseeds, pulses and small milletsin the district.
Methodology followed
- Collection of Primary and secondary data.
- Agro-ecosystem analysis done through PRA tools and techniques in different agro-ecological situations in representative villages.
- Problems identified.
- Action plan developed for problem solution within the mandated activities of the KVK.
